Aims:

  • CRITICAL REFLECTION

Reflect on your own learning journey.

  • AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

Note comments and feedback from audience research. Does this reflect your reflections or raise new questions?

MY KEY ADVICE TO MYSELF AS I MOVE ON TO THE MAIN PORTFOLIO

CRITICAL REFLECTION:

I feel as though I have had positive and negative moments on the journey in creating the preliminary music video. Firstly, researching about the task, this was one of the easier aspects of the overall task, for our research we decided to look through different continuity sequences as well as other music videos with the same idea, once my group had a strong idea as to what we wanted to achieve we found a music video which we were all happy with, then we started recording. From the planning segment of the task i gained valuable learning qualities such as collaboration and listening qualities in order to hear what everyone in the group had as an idea so we could try to incorporate each idea to give the music video a better range of diversity and a more unique feel.

For the planning of the project it was a similar process in that we needed to make sure all ideas were in the correct place and that we knew what we were going to be doing and when we were doing them. I feel as though in some places we could have been more efficient with our planning this includes making sure the storyboard of ideas was complete before going straight into the filming, this would have helped us be a lot more efficient in filming. However, we weren’t too worried as our efficiency during the filming was very strong so didn’t make much different, however it would’ve helped be even more efficient.

During production we worked really well as we had assigned each person a role which they needed to follow. For example the cameraman needed to make sure they were getting all the shots, for example close ups, long shots, zooms and different angles. Other roles included someone standing behind the cameraman with the music playing, this meant that the actor/model was able to lip sync to the music making it so much easier for editing and finishing off the production of the music video. Making sure that everyone had a role was much easier to make sure we were keeping a sustainable level of efficiency meaning we needed little time recording and allowed us to have more time editing as well as other things.

Editing, I found I was successful in a number of areas, for example collecting footage and cutting it down into a reasonable cuts so that all linked up with the lip syncing and the music, I also felt as though I was successful in using some editing tools as they helped to enhance the quality of the music video which I had been able to produce.

Overall I’d say that during the production of the music video there was evidence of successes in the quality of video produced as well as the research and planning stages of the music video. However there is also evidence of less constructive work as in some areas i could have been more efficient and effective with my resources to make an even better music video.

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK.

POSITIVE COMMENTS FROM CLASSMATES

  • Good transitions
  • Well lip synced
  • Good use of continuity through the moving camera  with the sound of the music
  • Good flow of continuity
  • Lip sync matched up to the lyrics
  • words made it more interesting
  • Good continuity shots
  • Clear narrative
  • Good lip-syncing and clear narrative

  • Good use of lyrics and subtitles, continuity when slipping letter underneath door.

NEGATIVE COMMENTS/IMPROVEMENTS

  • Instead of miming writing over already pre written letter, film actually writing it.

  • Aspect ratio
  • Last clip was an outtake – don’t need to use everything if it’s not right
  • Focusing on emotion and character helped – mediation
  • Quicker cut between door
  • Mise en scene made no sense
  • Shadow covering face
  • Writing on screen was not on time
  • The scenes could have flowed better = narrative
  • Lighting = shadows, sunlight
  • The graphics could have matched up to the lyrics better
  • Should of cut out the part where someone mouthed swearing
  • Aspect ration didn’t fit the screen
  • Don’t use footage which doesn’t fit e.g. Acter looking at the camera

OVERALL LESSONS LEARNED / FINAL TAKEAWAYS

  • Use of focusing sets up and emotional experience, so be mindful of how I use them depending on how I want the audience to feel.
  • Don’t be afraid to cut out some stuff if not necessary.
  • Make sure that you use time efficiently during all parts of the music video process so that I am able to give myself the best chance of creating a powerful and effective music video.
