32. Editing – Clip Transitioning
Aims:
- Show clear and clean transitions between the clips that are flashbacks and are normal to show the difference in timings and a change.
- Making sure the change is still working with the continuity and makes sense.
Throughout the music video there is evidence of transitions which are used to show flashbacks, difference in time zone as well as the other different aspects; such as going from one place to another. Making sure that this change was obvious is necessary in making sure that the whole clip adds up and looks the same throughout, the repetition of these clip transitions are necessary to making sure that the continuity isn’t ruined and will be able to show how and why each part has flashbacks.
The first instance is in the first 25 seconds on the music video:
Between the first and last photo it shows the change from the singer to the flashback in 2022 of the girls in their friendship, during this 3 second split we see the drop from full opacity clip into blackout and then quickly back into the full opacity however on a different clip. This quick transition would have been linked with lyrics. This adds to continuity and the importance of the storyline showing a clear change in time difference and locational differences.
Another instance is later on ‘years later’ in ‘2023’;
This is the first part before the transition into the rest of the clip, to do this I simply added a marker of 100 opacity so that the clip would be fully displayed throughout this part.
This second part of the transition is after the marker and has at this point reduced itself down to currently 20% opacity before it completely blacks out this way the clip is able to slowly drift out, allowing for a bit more patience and speed so that there is no rush or quick cut into the blackout. The gradual change looks better on the eye and will be more audience pleasing so will be able to gain better traction and better continuity when switching from one clip to another.
This is where the black out actually happens, as you can see the opacity has been reduced down to 0 and is evidence on the effects control panel to the left hand side of the image above. This happens as I placed another marker right at the end of the clip to show that the opacity should be 0, this is there to reinforce this idea of continuity on the music video.
It then gradually increases in opacity at the beginning of the next clip, this was done by having a marker at the beginning of the clip set to 0 opacity and then a couple of second later at full opacity (100) so that the increase is obvious and the transition looks smoother and fluent.
This is the final photo of the transition once it reached 100% opacity then it is clear that the transition has been completed, this has been able to show the full transition from one clip to another similar to one above. This adds to the levels of continuity and strength of the music video and makes the production levels seem more advanced.
Throughout the rest if the music video this was the way in which I changed between clips which showed a bit of change or something a like. I felt as though this was easier than adding a separate effect panel for each of the clip changes.
