24. Rough cut

Aims:

  • Produce a rough cut of my filming.

This rough cut isn’t just a rough cut of all clips stacked together. Each blank screen is where the long music parts at the end of the rough cut will be put into the clip and will help to make a more fluid and neater cut music video.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Overall creating the rough cut was a good experience and a way which we could use previous experiences to help with producing a good rough cut with evidence of skills used from the prelim task.
  • This rough cut gives examples and brief evidence of the final music video which will be complete in the near future.

23. Filming reflections

Aims:

  • Overall thoughts and feelings after filming.
  • WWW and EBI’s

Overall I found the filming experience a fun and entertaining learning curve. During the filming I was able to use different creative ideas in order to get different outcomes for shots and overall production objectives. Throughout the shoot there were a number of positive and negative aspect which can be reflected on and changed or adapted to in order to create a successful environment as well as produce a strong music video.

WWW

  • Actors enjoyed themselves
  • No negative energy within the production
  • All shots which were wanted were achieved
  • In production everyone worked well together
  • We were effective and efficient in or roles.
  • Even with minor setbacks we preserved and got to where we needed to be by the end.

EBI’s

  • Few hiccups throughout which slowed down the process
  • Not all original planned places of filming where available
  • In the future I will make sure to have correctly spaced out my timings of when i will do the filming and will try to make sure that the actors are on the same page and are equally aware of timings etc.

KEY TAKEAWAY:

  • Lots of positives and negatives to take from the filming, none more so than the overall achievement of getting all the filming done in the time which was available to us
  • In the future i will make sure to be more punctual and reasonable when planning the filming.

22. Shot list

Aims:

  • Create a list of different shots which will be in use.
  • Reference different angles and compositions of the camera and shots.
  • Analyse why they would be useful in the music video.

the shots listed below will be used in the filming

Shots:

  • Long shot – This creates distance in the music video and allows the audience to get a clearer understanding of the surroundings and shot.
  • Medium long shot – Is a mid point for the audience to get an understanding of the surroundings as well as the actor and their acting.
  • Medium shot – Seems more personal but still gives a range of variety in the music video.
  • Medium close upĀ  – Less about the surroundings and more about the actor it seems much more intimate.
  • Close up – Very much trying to create that sense of awkwardness between the actor and the audience
  • Over the shoulder shot – Used for showing conversation between two different actors/characters and helps to keep the fluency of the music video.

Angles

  • Low angles – This gives the actor more power and shows more about the scene and what the audience should be expecting based off the shot they have seen.
  • High angles – This gives the audience the power and makes the actor seem more vulnerable, however, I’m using it to mix up the angles and add variety
  • Eye level – This will be used throughout the music video as a standard shot but could change slightly depending on the circumstances of the music video and how everything turns out on the day.
  • Pan – This is movement of an actor which is followed directly by the camera and basically creates the idea of a journey and getting to places.
  • track – Following or staying with the actor in order to show their perspective and point of view on the event at hand.
  • Tilt – Moving the camera up and down to show the more of the particular event and creates more vision on the shot.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Throughout my filming and production I should try to use as many different shots, angles and compositions as I can so that I’m able to show a variety of different skills and terminology references in my work. Not all will be as effective as the other but the more difference and variety the better.
  • There wont be a few shots which are repeated over and over so will therefore allow for some more influence on the audience as it gets changed up a bit more, creating that sense of uniqueness and variety.

21. Risk assessment

Aims:

  • Find any risks with filming and locations of filming.

The locations for the filming were all very domestic in the sense i didn’t have to travel very far in order to do any filming. however, that doesn’t mean there were no risks involved.

Firstly, this front of the house has a few cars in the drive and so could become a hazard for example if one is leaving the house we would need to be mindful not to get run over. As well as this I’d need to make sure its okay with the owner of the cars if it is ok to film around them. Luckily it was ok but I have had to blur the numberplates.

This raises a very similar risk seeing as it is a segment of the filming made on the road, we would need to be careful of vehicles leaving driveways which might be a risk to us as well as the natural traffic which is on the road.

If an accident was to happen I’d also need to make sure that an emergency contact was easy to access I.E. calling 999 or a legal guardian in the nearby area.

Finally the last location which posed a real threat was at the park, its is a public place so being vigilant at all times is better for everyone’s safety. Furthermore, at the back of the goal which is where we went a couple of time, there is fast flowing stream which can be a problem if someone falls in and cant swim causing them to drown and will therefore require medical assistance.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • All locations of filming pose a risk some much more than others and it is important that I am aware of any risks so that I am able to keep not just myself safe but also my actors who play a major role in the music video.
  • knowing the risks is better than just assuming because life is unpredictable and anything could happen anywhere and at anytime.

20. Photo recce of locations

Aims:

  • Find a set of locations where I can shoot my music video.

First bedroom where the music video will begin and will have a short cameo.

Second bedroom where the second actor will begin and essentially will try to create the atmosphere of another country.

Where my actor playing the Australian role will be playing her AFL and other outdoor activities

Used the cars and front door area to create the feel of two different settings which can represent the difference between Australia and England

Towards the end of the music video this countertop is used to show both actors getting together and reigniting their friendship.

one of my actors will be here working and watching TV before the other actor gets to the doorbell and rings it.

Walking from the park to the house part of the music video.

leaving the house part of the music video towards the beginning/middle of the music video.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • These aren’t all of the locations but in terms of creating a music video most of the locations are very domestic and haven’t required a huge amount of distance travelled in order to film.
  • These locations also add a bit more flare and context to the music video and help to build on the storyline.

18. Plan and execution of props and costumes

Aims:

  • I plan to show my different outfits/costumes as well as props used throughout.
  • Different outfits for each scene and the mise-en-scene of my music video and actors/performers.

COSTUMES:

both of my female actors had a variety of different outfits which were able to represent different locations, different timings and be able to show reference to weather as well. For example both of the actors begin their part by sleeping and waking up so therefore were wearing pyjamas at the beginning of their introduction. As the music video progressed they changed into more weather appropriate clothing as well as a good attire to represent the activities they were doing, for example playing sport wearing more athletic clothes. Another example includes wearing clothes which make the setting and surrounding seem more weather related, hot weather, less layers. colder weather, more layers.

Overall throughout the music video it is clear to the audience that the different costumes and outfits are able to add character to both actors as well as contribute to the narrative.

PROPS:

In the music video we used a few different props to add to the storyline and overall additions to each scene. For example, when one of the actors is going to the airport there is a suitcase which can be seen in different areas of the music video to show the idea of travel and the whole “half the world away” concept. Furthermore, the use of props is continued with the use of and Aussie rules football which is kicked around and shows to the audience more about the difference in location this is because in Australia they play AFL but they don’t play in England. The different uses of props throughout the music video add context and character to the music video to create a bigger impact on the audience.

these are a few examples of props and costumes which have featured.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • The use of costumes and props throughout my music video played a key part in the depth and quality of production and helped massively to influence the storyline of the song.
  • I feel as though I could have used a lot more different props and a range of different costumes to show more diversity and variety in the music video and would have helped to create an even bigger effect on the audience.

17. Research and planning for social media page

Aims:

  • To look at social media pages of other artists and analyse each page
  • Make sure to reference my own ideas which I have gathered from these social media pages.

The artist which I plan on analysing include; Taylor swift, The Weeknd, Central Cee and finally The Courteeners. All of these artists have different social media profiles (Instagram and TikTok), furthermore each of these artists have different genres for example Pop, Indie Rock, Rap and finally alternative R&B.

THE WEEKND:

On this Instagram page we can see a clear representation and theme surrounding fire and passion as well as a sense of intimacy due to some of the photos showing close up images and creepy shots of the protagonist/lead singer. In terms of the way the rest of the page is set up there is a small amount of biography, a link to the music/website and they have a controlled following. We can tell that this band/artist are very much active on Instagram as they have recently uploaded stories and tend to want to keep the audience entertained. I have also noticed that they haven’t included a highlights reel which adds to the theme really nicely, its doesn’t look overly intimidating and is still producing enjoyable content.

Personally I really like the idea of keeping a consistent theme which correlates to the music. I’m also a big fan of a small Bio and advertising their content so that potential listeners and consumers of the content are able to listen, this means that they are likely to get more exposure and become a more well known household name in the music scene.

COURTEENERS:

For the Courteeners I’m noticing a theme surrounding bright colours and using it quite commonly mainly consisting of the colour purple and pink. Furthermore, they have included things such as a lengthy Biography with lots of information around their tour and new albums being released. In comparison to the weeknd they have included a highlights reel which consists of different albums and gig performances such as Heaton Park and Glastonbury. They are equally a constant Instagram user due to their story uploads and well as the multiple amount of links in their bio and the tag for their Instagram threads account which is a stem page for Instagram. This allows for them to get more publication and noticed by a wider range of people and is seen as a strong marketing technique in order to help them get recognised.

In my Social media page I plan to include some similar aspects for example a highlights reel as will as multiple links in the Bio so that listeners can access the music as well as any other published items quickly and easily.

TAYLOR SWIFT:

Like the previous artists; Taylor has kept a significant theme this includes black and white photography and more professionally studio taken photos. furthermore, the use of different Instagram features such as Highlights and biography. For her highlights they are very well organised and shows she takes pride and care in the social media side of her career. For her Biography she has kept it short informative, labelling her new album, when it will get released and then a few website and music link below.

Overall, this shows to the audience she is familiar with the use of social media and it has helped her to reach over 250 Million followers as well as make her one of the greatest artists of her generation and genre of music.

Furthermore, I would say that her Instagram page is frequently active as she has over 650 posts as well as frequent collections of photos from different concerts and gigs as well as studio and production behind the scenes.

Finally, my last artist is CentralCee, a British UK rapper who’s Instagram page shows more about his lifestyle as well as music. Personally, I really like his Instagram page due to its aesthetically pleasing feel and look. To begin his bio is very short with only one word “entrepreneur” and an emoji. then below he says “not real life” which is most likely an inside joke or references something about his life. Furthermore, his page includes videos of his music as well as different images of things he does and his overall lifestyle. He isn’t frequently active but posts every now and again to show his public image, which allows his audience to understand more about his lifestyle.

In comparison to the other Instagram pages he doesn’t include a lengthy bio, highlights reels, links to his music or pinned posts, this shows he has frequent activity but isn’t an intense user where he posts insights into his life.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • I have enjoyed analysing each of these different artists and their ways of publicising there content. I have noticed that each genre of musician and each artist has a different way of relaying their music or message to their audience. For example Taylor Swift’s Instagram and courteeners Instagram are very much theme coordinated where as the weeknd and CentralCee are very much aesthetically influenced to show lifestyle and music.
  • Overall, for my own social media page, I plan on using the page to show the behind the scenes aspects of filming and how I put my own twist on making my chosen music video and song. I will frequently post to show my audience my productivity and progress on production.
